Are you interested in starting a local chapter of PBJ Watch? It’s easy! First, make a bunch of PBJs…
OK, I’ll walk you through it. Here are the supplies you’ll need to make 20-25 sandwiches, which of course you can scale up:
40 oz jar of peanut butter
32 oz jar of jam/jelly
3 loaves of 100% whole wheat sliced bread
Reclosable sandwich bags
Water bottles (optional, but appreciated)
1. Clean your workspace with sanitizing wipes (long counters or tables are best) and don disposable gloves, plus a mask if COVID is a concern.
2. Lay out all your bread slices on your workspace. (Save the bread bags). Neat rows make it easier to divide the bread in half, which will let you know how many to PB and how many to J.
3. Scoop out PB using a spoon and/or knife onto half of the bread slices, then spread. Repeat with J. Protip: bring a friend – many hands make light work.
4. Marry PB slices to J slices, then bag sandwiches in the reclosable bags. The bigger bread bags are a great way to carry your bagged-up sandwiches and will make transportation easier.
5. That’s it! Now you’re ready to distribute. Find a popular gathering spot and pass out the fruits of your labor (I usually give two sandwiches and a water out at a time, with a friendly “PBJ for you, partner?”). For maximum freshness, avoid leaving stuff in a car in the hot sun or overnight.
6. Finally, be safe (the buddy system is great). The vast majority of folks are very grateful for the food and to see someone who cares. However, some are struggling with mental illness and may be inappropriate with you. Be friendly and move on.
PBJ Watch does not recommend giving rides or money to people. We are not a taxi service. I can’t believe I need to say this, but no sex or drugs either – these people are often very vulnerable and you’re there to help.
We are not associated with any particular religious faith, but also understand that people’s spirituality may inspire them to help their fellow human beings. Expressions of personal faith are fine, but please no proselytizing.
Thank you,
Woody
